The BlueCard® Program

As a Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan member, you are a member of the BlueCard Program. The program covers you within and outside of the U.S., providing access to doctors and hospitals in more than 200 countries and territories around the world and giving you the peace of mind that you'll be able to find the healthcare provider you need. The plan offers numerous savings that Blue Cross and Blue Shield has negotiated with doctors and hospitals in the area. For covered services, you should not have to pay any amount above these negotiated rates. To learn more about the program, review this BlueCard Program brochure.

Preventive vs. Diagnostic Care

Do you know the difference?

Preventive care helps protect you from getting sick.  Diagnostic care is used to find the cause of existing illnesses. If your doctors suggests you take a test when you have no symptoms, that is considered preventive care.  If you have symptoms and you take a test  to see what is causing them, that is diagnostic care.

Anthem health plans offer a number of preventive care services from doctors in your plan's network which cost you nothing.  (If you use a doctor outside the network, you may have to pay a small portion of the costs.) Check out this flyer which identifies preventive physical exams, screening tests and immunizations for children, women, and adults.

Getting regular check-ups and exams can help you stay well and catch health problems early.  It may even save your life!

Emergency Care: Where To Go?

Emergency CareIf you need care right away, the emergency room (ER) can be crowded and may cost more ($200 or more/visit vs. $50-$75/other options). The emergency room rule of thumb is to call 911 or go to the ER if you think you could put your health at serious risk by delaying care. If it’s not a medical emergency, do you know your other choices?

Retail health clinics and urgent care centers take less time and cost about the same as a regular doctor visit and most are open weeknights and weekends. For an easy-to-read chart about your options, the services offered, and co-pays, consider your choices here. To find a doctor’s office or clinic near you, go to anthem.com/eralt/wi or call Customer Service at the number on the back of your ID card.

Better yet, let a nurse help you decide which type of care makes the most sense by calling the 24/7 NurseLine.  The number is on the back of your ID card. ER alternatives in your state are also available by searching Google, Yahoo! or Bing by typing “Anthem WI Urgent Care.”
